Sarnath, Varanasi

4.1
Visit the village of Sarnath, one of four holy destinations on the Buddhist circuit, boasting a deer park where Buddha gave his first Dharma sermon. Join Buddhists from all over the world, who flock to this key pilgrimage site, the most sacred of the circuit stops, along with Buddha’s place of birth, death, and enlightenment. Admire the various stupas and Buddhist meditation structures, including one that marks the spot where the first teaching happened, or explore the small town and take in the peaceful atmosphere. • Great day trip. Very cool to think Buddha taught here. Be wary, your driver will likely take you to a silk shop buts it’s no big deal. We actually bought a bunch of stuff haha, but if you don’t want i...  more »

  • A good collection of ancient artifact of Buddhist and Indus valley civilization are preserved here. This is a museum and not a temple, here some visitors start to offer prayer inside the museum with the help of their tour guide. But these tour guide who behave like a super smart most of the time cause inconvenience to the visitors.
  • I have watched this museum two times. Ashoka Pillar which is our national emblem is placed in this museum. This museum have all the Potteries and statues which have been found during digging. Nice place but remember it remains closed on Monday.
  • Nice place to see very very ancient collections. very educative, well done ASI.
  • This is one of the core places for the art history lover as well as cultural enthusiastic to visit in sarnath. This museum is located next to the excavation sites and houses the upper part of ashokan pillar. There is lovely collection of Buddhist artifacts found during the excavation, sculpture and figures from the mauryan, kushwan and Guptas period, Sculpture of buddha, bodhisatvas and the monk bala patronized statue with umbrella are also there. When you see the beauty of the sculptures.. You won't be able distract your eyes from the sculptures. Mobile phones and your other belongings are not allowed to take in the museum. You have to kept them in locker.
  • Worth visiting, it is not a visual pleasure place to visit but yes if you're interested in history then it has the essence.

Where to stay in Varanasi

The old city of Varanasi has a long history of pilgrimage and tourism, and its range of accommodations has developed to a high degree to meet the vast demand from across India and further afield. Perhaps the most interesting and atmospheric place to stay can be found in the area surrounding the ghats on the west bank of the river. You can find an eclectic mix of simple hotels and guesthouses all the way from this point up to the main train station. North of the station sit the most luxurious of the city's accommodations, with views of the tributary that runs through the north, and a range of additional facilities.
