Nepali Temple (Kathwala Temple), Varanasi

(4.1/5 based on 120 reviews on the web)
Admire vermillion colored walls lined with dark and elaborately carved planks at Nepali Temple (Kathwala Temple), a Nepalese-style Hindu shrine built on a Ganges ghat by the King of Nepal. Termite-resistant wood and carvers were brought from Nepal in 1843 to construct this compact structure featuring exquisite woodwork and pagoda-style architecture. Surrounded by tamarind and peepal trees, the temple houses a Shiva lingam and offers a sweeping view of Varanasi and the sacred river. Made of baked bricks, stone and wood, this temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a replica of Kathmandu’s Pashupatinath Temple. • Very nice set of Nepalese architecture, with a temple (remarkable carved frame) and a home-court to accommodate the pilgrims. Don't hesitate to climb a few steps to get there.

  • This temple is really beautiful, the sculptures in wood are impressive details. On the other hand, is not a necessary step, 10 minutes to the (small) tour. Admission is charged: 20 rupees.

  • The King of Nepal had built this temple on Lalita ghat on Ganga river at Varanasi in Nepali style. This Nepali temple is also called the Kathwala temple. The temple has some magnificent and articulate woodwork.
  • Beautiful replica of Kathmandu's Pashupati temple. It's small but the wood carvings are beautiful and the baba's let us go inside the shrine without any hassle. Serene and peaceful.
  • Its construction was the eye catching part of this temple.
  • Loved the elegant wooden carvings on this temple. From here, it's a great location to see the view of the Ganges.
