Monkey Temple (Durga Temple), Varanasi
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Admire the vibrant red building of Monkey Temple (Durga Temple), an 18th-century complex dedicated to the Hindu mother goddess Durga. Many, however, refer to the red ochre temple by the primate residents on its premises. Take a walk around the lush green courtyard of the temple, whose idol, legend has it, spontaeously appeared. Admire the dramatic verticality of the Nagara architecture. Shoes and photography are not allowed on the perimeter; non-Hindus can only visit the courtyard and not the inner sanctum.
