Dhamek Stupa, Varanasi
Categories: Monuments, Tourist Spots
Marvel at exquisite ancient stonemasonry and bricklaying at Dhamek Stupa, a massive early Buddhist tower built in 500 AD in the spot of an older stupa built by King Ashoka. Believed to mark the spot where Buddha preached his first sermon, this impressive 34 m (111.5 ft) tall cylinder-shaped structure features a stone drum base of 28.5 m (93.5 ft) in diameter with the upper portion made of bricks. Geometrical and floral designs dominate the lower parts of the tower with swastikas, some human figures and birds. Pilgrims come to pray in the garden surrounding the tower on a huge lawn lined with trees. Today it is a city with streets and avenues, Buddhist temples, jain and others. To the stupa only is paying, or entering from the jain Temple, which lets see it up close. Remember that in the jain temples you can use animal hides, etc. It is interesting to be a visit to Sarnath. The Tibetan Temple is very nice, as well as nepali. All Buddhist States have collaborated with temples, them can be visited all, but the day is not enough for that. To see a few, we have seen what to see.show original
