Dhamek Stupa, Varanasi

4.3
Marvel at exquisite ancient stonemasonry and bricklaying at Dhamek Stupa, a massive early Buddhist tower built in 500 AD in the spot of an older stupa built by King Ashoka. Believed to mark the spot where Buddha preached his first sermon, this impressive 34 m (111.5 ft) tall cylinder-shaped structure features a stone drum base of 28.5 m (93.5 ft) in diameter with the upper portion made of bricks. Geometrical and floral designs dominate the lower parts of the tower with swastikas, some human figures and birds. Pilgrims come to pray in the garden surrounding the tower on a huge lawn lined with trees. A visit to Dhamek Stupa represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Varanasi day trip planning site to plot your vacation.

Historical and worshiped place fir all humanity for peace and brotherhood. Lord Buddha has delivered his 1st sermon to his followers. Nicely maintained and managed. Precaution: Don't hire any guide here. Even unknown person can roam and understand all the places.

It's just so serene. I don't have adequate words to describe it. It's an experience you want to enjoy on a cloudy, breezy day.

The place is great as Buddha delivered his first sermon here. First hand experience of the pillars which supported the lion capital which is kept inside the Saranath Museum nearby. A monolithic railing which was once a part of an Stoopa can also be viewed. A temple complex is also one of the protected monument here. Avoid going in summers.

The place were Gautam Buddha preached his first sermon to Pancch Vaggiya Bhikkhu (the first five monks) thus activating the 'Wheel of Dhamma'. The sermon is famous as 'Dhamma Chakka Pavattan Sutta'... It's an important landmark in the World History and one of the top four Ancient Buddhist Heritage sites. The imposing structure and the blissful ambience has it's good impression on the non-Buddhist visitors too. Other than the Indians many foreign tourists especially from the Buddhist nations visit this place. The gardens and lawns are well maintained by the government agencies. Even being such an important monument it's not in the list of UNESCO's World Heritage sites...

Where to stay in Varanasi

The old city of Varanasi has a long history of pilgrimage and tourism, and its range of accommodations has developed to a high degree to meet the vast demand from across India and further afield. Perhaps the most interesting and atmospheric place to stay can be found in the area surrounding the ghats on the west bank of the river. You can find an eclectic mix of simple hotels and guesthouses all the way from this point up to the main train station. North of the station sit the most luxurious of the city's accommodations, with views of the tributary that runs through the north, and a range of additional facilities.
