Dhamek Stupa, Varanasi

(4.3/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
Marvel at exquisite ancient stonemasonry and bricklaying at Dhamek Stupa, a massive early Buddhist tower built in 500 AD in the spot of an older stupa built by King Ashoka. Believed to mark the spot where Buddha preached his first sermon, this impressive 34 m (111.5 ft) tall cylinder-shaped structure features a stone drum base of 28.5 m (93.5 ft) in diameter with the upper portion made of bricks. Geometrical and floral designs dominate the lower parts of the tower with swastikas, some human figures and birds. Pilgrims come to pray in the garden surrounding the tower on a huge lawn lined with trees.
