Assi Ghat, Varanasi
(4.4/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Head down the steps at Assi Ghat to appreciate the ceremonial architecture and atmosphere of the city's southernmost ghat (a series of stairs leading to a body of water). Located at the confluence of two major rivers, the riverbank area is reputedly the place where the goddess Durga threw her sword into the water after killing a demon. See the large Shiva lingam (an abstract representation of the deity) under the shade of a peepal tree, a major site of Hindu pilgrimage and a focal point of ceremonies and celebrations at the ghat. • Lots to see and experience...a good guide is a must to ensure that you do not end up in the small alleys
  • Located about 4kms from Hotel Ganga at the main chowk (I forget the name), this is a quiet Ghat. I recommend that one reaches the Ghat at about 9 in the morning and sit there with your camera. After s...  more »
  • The difference of Assi is that it is wide and is the first starting with the southern Ghats. As Varanasi has more than 85 Ghats, all them in a stretch of some two kilometers, is a pleasure go to Assi and go them all in a day. In Tulsi there an Akhara, where the Kushti fighting a style of fight free of the India.

  • Mostly tourist don't go this place and this place is also not crowded but only a few people know that many Bollywood and Hollywood film shootings are done here. I have revealed a secret! Oops!
  • One of the must visit places in Varanasi. Calm and serene atmosphere makes you want to just sit there and relax. Enjoy sunrise on a boat ride. Popular among college students. Good food options are also available nearby.
  • Lifeline for most of the students of IIT(BHU). Watching "Subah - e - Banaras" , Evening Aarti , Daily commotion sitting on the upper stairs, with sips of lemon masala tea are some of the memory which i will relish for rest of my life.
  • It's one of the prime locations in this ancient city. The ghat looks lot cleaner than what it used to be earlier. The Ganga aarati that takes places here is an essence of the city's camaraderie.
