Kal Bhairav Temple, Ujjain
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Witness unusual offerings to the city's guardian deity at Kal Bhairav Temple, one the most active places of worship in town. The 18th-century temple stands on the site of a much older place of worship, and bears stylistic evidence of the Maratha reign in North India. Look for the tower of lamps, or deepmalika, and the deity Kal Bhairav's silver-headed image in stone covered with vermillion. Liquor is the tantric offering here, as well as symbolic gifts of meat, fish, and other foods, which visitors can purchase before entry. Watch as a priest offers prayers before pouring the liquor into a statue's mouth--supposedly there is no cavity to hold the imbibed fluid. Put Kal Bhairav Temple and other Ujjain attractions into our Ujjain tourist route planner, and watch your holiday take shape.
