Girivalam, Arunachaleswarar Temple, Tiruvannamalai

Religious Site Tourist Spot
Take part in the grueling ritual of Girivalam, Arunachaleswarar Temple. Held every full moon, the ceremony involves worshippers' circumambulating the holy mountain--a barefoot journey of at least 14 km (8.7 mi)--visiting the eight lingams along the way. Each of the lingams represents certain benefits, such as long life, wealth, and peace of mind. If the idea of this long, difficult journey at the height of day proves too intimidating, you can traverse the trail after dark, with sodium lamps lighting the way. Drinking water is available along the route. Plan to visit Girivalam, Arunachaleswarar Temple during your Tiruvannamalai vacation using our convenient Tiruvannamalai trip itinerary planner.

  • Great Indian Architecture... A temple glorifying the Hindu Richness... contradicting it is the main Gods sanctuary. It takes us to a state of inner peace :) a must visit temple!!
  • Good place to visit especially for lord Shiva followers. Ancient temple with eyebrow raising structures. It is said that if one recites Arunachal Shiva's name before death, he will be given Mukthi. Temple has multiple entrances, getting through main entrance is good option.
  • Very nice place. Wonderful stone sculptures. Perfectly maintained place for devotional values.
  • I am american and spent so much time in line waiting to get in....just to learn that they don't allow foreigners inside ...very sad 😢
  • Huge old temple. Hugely popular for its deepam. Decent parking facility around the temple. No crowd other than deepam days. One of the must see places in Tamil Nadu.
