Admire a monumental, exquisitely carved multi-story gopuram of Sri Govindarajaswami Temple, one of the oldest structures in Tirupati and an important Hindu shrine. Consecrated in 1130, the popular temple features two shrines made in the traditional architecture of the Vaishnava Hindu sect. Flocked by pilgrims making their offering to the imposing presiding deity, lord in a sleeping posture, the temple complex includes a museum and a cluster of shrines. Check out painted elephants during festival times, including the annual float festival. Where to stay in Tirupati

With millions of pilgrims visiting Tirupati each year, the city offers a large variety of places to stay, but can reach bursting point during festival times. An independent Hindu trust provides free accommodation for pilgrims, with a range of private accommodations also catering primarily to religious visitors. With a wide range of options to meet different budgetary needs, the majority of the city's hotels--mostly two- or three-star establishments--cluster around the center close to the shrine. A handful low-budget lodges, guesthouses, and hostels are scattered around the fringes of the city. Make sure to reserve your room well in advance if visiting during pilgrimage season.
