(4.7/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
Surrounded by a massive stone wall enclosing an area of 3.6 hectares (9 acres), Vadakkunnathan Temple features classic Kerala architecture with monumental towers on all four sides. Set in the heart of Thrissur, this represents one of the largest and oldest Hindu temples in the region, with its koothambalam, or temple theater, dating from the 7th century. Pay special attention to the murals, which depict episodes from the Mahabharata, and enjoy the temple's lively colors, elaborate wooden carvings, and expansive surrounding greenery. Every year, millions of devotees flock to see a line of decorated elephants during the temple's famous pooram festival (mid-April to mid-May), culminating in firecrackers. Vadakkunnathan Temple is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Thrissur Edition.

  • It is in the heart of Trissur town but the massive stone wall surrounding the temple creates a religious and serene atmosphere inside. The temple is large and impressive. The place is so calm. Just walk around the temple and your mind would be at peace. The temple has typical Kerala Architecture. The best time to visit will be during the festival time when there is a lot of action. Would recommend a visit in the evening or early morning as it will be very sunny otherwise.
  • Not just an important place of worship for Hindus but also one of the prominent sightseeing place in Thrissur for everyone. Beatiful archeology, well maintained landscaping and center of cultural activities!
  • Vadakumnathan is a shiva temple situated in the heart of Thrissur. Temple is known for Thrissur Pooram. Unlike other temples, there is a proper order in which we must worship statue and it is printed in the walls of the temple. A walk through the temple will surely calm down your soul and body. MUST VISIT ATLEAST ONCE IN YOUR LIFE TIME
  • ഇത് തൃശ്ശൂരിന്റെ സ്വന്തം വടക്കുംനാഥ ക്ഷേത്രം.The temple is situated in an elevated hillock in the centre of city of Thrissur and is surrounded by a massive stone wall enclosing an area of nearly 9 acres (36,000 m2). Inside this fortification, there are four gopuras each facing north, south, east and west directions. Between the inner temple and the outer walls, there is a spacious compound, the entrance to which is through gopuras. Of these, the gopuras on the south and north are not open to the public and have to enter either through the east or west gopura. The inner temple is separated from the outer temple by a broad circular granite wall enclosing a broad corridor called Chuttambalam. Entrance into the inner temple is through a passage through the corridor.
  • Sitting at the centre of thrissur town, even in the midst of heavily packed traffic during the rush hours, the temple and its ground offers an excellent and peaceful surrounding filled with lots of positive energy. You can meet people of all cultures and status, coming for all sorts of recrestions, eslecially during early morning and evening time. A must visit!
