#1 of 19 in Historic Sites in Thrissur
Surrounded by a massive stone wall enclosing an area of 3.6 hectares (9 acres), Vadakkunnathan Temple features classic Kerala architecture with monumental towers on all four sides. Set in the heart of Thrissur, this represents one of the largest and oldest Hindu temples in the region, with its koothambalam, or temple theater, dating from the 7th century. Pay special attention to the murals, which depict episodes from the Mahabharata, and enjoy the temple's lively colors, elaborate wooden carvings, and expansive surrounding greenery. Every year, millions of devotees flock to see a line of decorated elephants during the temple's famous pooram festival (mid-April to mid-May), culminating in firecrackers. • With beautiful lakes and rivers, sprawling hills, scenic locations, lush greenery filled with coconut plantations, Kerala is really a tourist’s paradise. No wonder, it is called as ‘God’s Own Country’. In a way, this attribute also fits so well with the state as it has many magnificent and ancient temples which are not only splendid in terms of their history, mythology and beauty but also because all these temples are administered in traditional manner with emphasis on ancient rituals and ceremonies. Thus, a visit to this temples is a must when one is in Kerala.
  • Whom am I to give star rating to these types of places. They are beyond imagination of a common man like me. Just see the place and enjoy it to the core. However, just for the sake of giving my feedback, I have the following points to make... 1. There is an instruction board inside the temple. It is not placed outside the temple, near the entry. It is also not placed inside, immediately after our entry in to the temple. It is placed on a place where we will see it after circumventing the temple completely. And that board says what all we must see while circumventing the temple !!. Hope better commonsense prevails on the authorities. 2. Next, there is no toilet facility near the entrance or the parking area of the temple. It is in a far off place. People find it very inconvenient to go there, specially if they are in a hurry. In case if you agree with my points, kindly click on LIKE below, so that the concerned authorities may notice my review in the thousands of reviews and might take some action.
  • Nice place with clean and fresh environment. The air contains full of positive energy. Whenever you come here you can feel it. Temple is surrounded with large area. The big trees make it greenary site.
  • A clean and silent holy temple in the Center of the city. Not so much crowd when we visited. Felt peaceful. Heard that the Pooram festival here is famous. Planned to go at that time. Its located in the main road and one cannot say its so famous. Its different from other temples. Easily accessible and no crowd. Unfortunately we visited just when the temple closed. It closes at sharp, 11:00 a.m in the morning
  • Very calm and big compound. Once you enter you will find lot of peace of mind. Well designed and maintained by temple. Very old and ancient temple. Located in heart of the city. From Guruvayur just 26kms. Lot of trees and useful info and you can spend lot of time here. Still you feel that you have to visit again. May be 1000year old temple. Morning 5am to 11am. Evening 5pm to 9pm temple timings. This is the one of the best place I have ever seen. Life time once we have to visit once here.
