Visit Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, one of the main shrines of Lord Shiva worship in India since the Classical period. The current design of the temple, adorned with bronze and stone statues depicting various religious deities, dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Admire the design's rich philosophical meaning, such as its nine gateways that symbolize the nine orifices in the human body. Likewise, the hall next to the Artha Mantapa features 18 pillars, recalling the 18 Puranas, or sacred Hindu writings. The temple stands tall over the Sivaganga, a tank that can be reached by a flight of stone stairs leading to the pool's base.
