  • This dungeon lies north of Ranganatha Swamy Temple and close to Lal Mahal Palace. Named after Colonel Bailey's death (1782) in this dungeon. This dungeon was used to imprison British Prisoners by Tipu Sultan.
  • this is very next to "Ranganath Temple" in srirangapatna. This was Jail during Tippu's period. 15 - 30 min you can spend and go back to 1700s period. Maintained cleanly by Tourist department.
  • "In this dungeon were confined for many years the British officers taken prisoner by Tipu Sultan." reads the plaque to the entrance of this dungeon. Named after one of the British officers, Colonel Bailey, who died in here. You can see the Cauvery river flowing behind.
  • Beautiful place to visit. Love the historic vibes and old school feel of srirangapatna.
  • The history related to this area is very painful. British officer Colonel Bailey, who served as a prisoner of war in Tipu’s time, breathed his last in 1782. The dungeons in Srirangapatna were named after him. A large cannon in the center of the dungeon can be seen. There are some historical theories about the presence of the cannon. A large hole in the ceiling is also there above the cannon. One of the stories is that the cannon rolled back from roof while Tipu was in war with the British during the military blockage at Srirangapatna.
