Manasbal Lake, Srinagar
Categories: Bodies of Water, Nature & Parks
Tucked away from crowds of tourists, Manasbal Lake provides a chance to enjoy peace and serenity of nature. Watched over by a majestic mountain, the lake puts on a magical display of lotus flowers in the summer (blooming in August and July) and in the winter, it becomes one of the largest haunts of aquatic birds in Kashmir. Man-made structures to see include the ruins of a 17th-century fort close to the northern bank and of a garden overlooking the lake, both built by the Moghuls. Look for the submerged Hindu temple (dating back to 800-900 CE) with fish swimming around its top. If you feel adventurous, have a shikara ride on the lake or go camping, but know that the lake is less than perfectly maintained.
