In the heart of the old city lies Jama Masjid Mosque, where thousands of Muslim devotees come to pray. The massive mosque features four towers, three gates, and two 40 m (131 ft) minarets made of sandstone and white marble, all spreading over a surface of 1,200 sq m (12,910 sq ft). Built between 1644 and 1658 by more than 5,000 artisans with Shah Jahan at the helm, the mosque contains intricate carvings on its walls as well as verses from the Koran. Inside, observe the black and white marble floor, which resembles a Muslim prayer mat, and a total of 899 surrounding black prayer boxes. The monumental structure can house some 25,00 people, but officials demand constant peace and silence no matter the crowd.
