Somnath Temple, Somnath

(4.5/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Stop at Somnath Temple and observe the structure's impressive Chalukya-style architecture. Standing on an ancient holy site where the moon god Soma reputedly bathed, the temple has undergone destruction and reconstruction several times over millennia; the most recent instantiation dates from 1947. Observe the temple's unique Shiva linga, believed to be one of 12 Jyotirlingas in the country, each placed where Shiva reputedly appeared in a column of fire. Be aware when exploring that cameras and phones are not permitted within the temple. Add Somnath Temple and other attractions to your Somnath trip itinerary using our Somnath trip itinerary planner.

  • Time worships shiva. Original temple is quite tiny compare to which built after independence. Photographs are not allowed inside temple premise. Though heavy security they aren't much on alert ⚠ all the time.
  • Ancient Hindu temple, also in one of the jyotirling. Recreation been done by sardar Patel former home minister of India. Great place with good services for tourist. Wonderful view of Arabian Sea from Temple viewpoint.
  • Beautiful Shiva Temple overlooking the vast blue beautiful sea. Very windy place and heavenly atmosphere. Staff is helpful and disabled friendly. There are multiple rounds of security checking. No bags, cameras, mobiles or leather wear is permitted in the temple, which is a mood dampener as the temple and surrounding views are amazing and worth capturing. Also, the place to store the footwear is located quite far from the temple and the route is covered with filth.
  • 1st Jyotir linga of Lord Shiva 🚩🙏Somnath is traditionally considered the first pilgrimage site: the Dwadash Jyotirlinga pilgrimage begins with the Somnath Temple. The temple, that was destroyed and re-built sixteen times, is held in reverence throughout India and is rich in legend, tradition, and history. It is located at Prabhas Patan (Somnath - Veraval) in Saurashtra region of Gujarat state in western India.
  • Very good darshan, Mangal aarti darshan is well organised
