#2 of 14 in Things to do in Somnath
Stop at Somnath Temple and observe the structure's impressive Chalukya-style architecture. Standing on an ancient holy site where the moon god Soma reputedly bathed, the temple has undergone destruction and reconstruction several times over millennia; the most recent instantiation dates from 1947. Observe the temple's unique Shiva linga, believed to be one of 12 Jyotirlingas in the country, each placed where Shiva reputedly appeared in a column of fire. Be aware when exploring that cameras and phones are not permitted within the temple. • A gorgeous and amazing place. The campus is one of the cleanest. Even inside the temple, it's well ventilated and clean. One of my concerns is regarding the Z+ security. Despite the security claims, the police guards are busy chit chatting. The metal detectors are not working. The don't even have hand held metal detectors. Anyway, the sea views are amazing, especially during the sunset. Must visit
  • The temple as such has it's own rich ancient history, with what it being one of the twelve'Jyotirling. It's simple and elegant. But that's not all. The campus is indeed the cleanest of amongst all the temples I've ever been to. As a bonus, it's on the seashore and allows a beautiful view of the Arabian sea stretching for miles. A calm and soothing place, it definitely has a positive aura. The lights show here after sunset is also worth seeing. Highly recommended spot if you are in the vicinity.

  • Ancient temple .....newly built ... Perfect location... Awesome sea view. Z+ security provided to this temple... NO MOBILE PHONE, BAGS,CAMERA, TRIPOD IS ALLOWED NOT EVEN A NORMAL BELT... unhappy with the supporting staff.. quite rude staff.. one can not complete the sight seeing of temple in an hour, so they charged extra 10rs from each visitor for late coming... So better option to go there is don't take any belonging not even belt. & Enjoy there... Temple is completely rebuilt by gov.... they mobile locker system free & chargeable both, in chargeable system one can charge their mobile phone too for an hour. Baggage system, only shoe rack system is free. Prasad range starts from 20rs. No guide available to give ancient history. so from my point of view this is good place like other & can visit it a single time in life only. Have a good luck ...
  • Beautiful, the temple has been restored and is a must visit. The atmosphere inside the temple was great and you get a good darshan. Queues were managed well, there is a locker facility to keep your camera and cell phones. Don't miss the Light and Sound show, unlike the regular light and sound show this takes you back into history and let's you know of the numerous attacks and loots this temple has gone through. We went with kids and they too enjoyed. The open museum is informative and the view of the sea makes it awesome.

Where to stay in Somnath

Development in the area close to Somnath's main train station has created a cluster of places to stay, eateries, and stores. With more space available here than in the older parts of town to the south, a number of large hotels boast amenities such as onsite restaurants and swimming pools. To the south, where the town gets more crowded around the temple, you'll find a number of guesthouses--some explicitly for the use of pilgrims--offering good rates right in the heart of the temple town.
