Zoo / Aquarium Nature / Park
Get a close-up view of lions, tigers, and leopards recovering from circus life at Tiger and Lion Safari, Shimoga, an open zoo and a popular wildlife reserve on Shimoga-Sagar Road some 10 km (6.2 mi) from Shimoga. This safari park run by the Indian government covers some 200 ha (494 ac) of land, with ticket prices raising money to help the animals here return to the wild. In addition to large felines, you can see sloth bears, deer, and many other mammals, as well as a variety of rare birds, including white and silver pheasants. A small zoo and an interactive children’s park make this a good place for families to visit. Learn about wildlife and the effects of animal cruelty, and observe some magnificent creatures. Put Tiger and Lion Safari, Shimoga and other Shimoga attractions into our Shimoga tourist route planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

Where to stay in Shimoga

A major regional town and regular base of explorations, Shivamogga has a decent set of accommodations to cater to its guests. Lying mainly southwest of Shivamogga Town Railway Station, a set of hotels and guesthouses offers some upmarket, business-class options, as well as refreshingly simple lodgings designed for outdoor adventurers. Take a look at some places closer to the Tunga River if you want a little removal from the city, through most people are happy enough with the bit of instant green afforded by Gandhi Park in the middle of town.

  • Well maintained. People should definitely visit here. Great place and good staff. Even though it looks like it is still under construction. The ambience is good.  more »
  • The best part was that two tigers were walking right in front of our bus. Lovely experience of being taken around the sanctuary in a bus and upclose to the animals, even spotted dears and lions.  more »
  • Well maintained place, good to visit with family, the worst part is monkeys, beware of monkeys they snatch your bag.  more »
