  • Originally built as a vice regal lodge , is a beautiful building full of architectural beauty . It's about 5 km from the mall road. You can take a local taxi to this place which will leave you right at the place. If you come by your own vehicle it will not be allowed to enter the gate and you will have to walk about a km to reach to the advance studies. If you do not have the above options do not worry. Just take a bus to old bustand . From there take a bus to summer hill, it will cost you only 10 bucks. Let the conductor know that you want to go to advance studies he will tell you where to get down. You will have to walk around 1.5 km to the institute through the beautiful surroundings.
  • Absolutely beautiful building. The garden area is also fabulous. I would recommend doing the heritage walk from The Ridge to The Institute of Advanced Studies (also known as the Viceregal lodge -It used to be the residence of the Viceroy of India during British era). There are many great buildings and sights along the way. The Institute is closed on Mondays and is open only till 5 pm for 10 months a year. Only during 2 summer months (May and June) is it open till 7 pm.
  • Good place for those who are interested in History of India. Has good photographs of important events and personalities. No access for visitors into library. There is time limit to complete visit of each section. Can't spend time as per your wish. No photography inside.
  • The Viceregal Palace is great. Interiors too. But the access to public is limited. Get a bus to Summer Hill from local bus stand.
  • The building is an excellent example of Victorian architecture located in a picturesque setting near Shimla. Previously known as Viceregal Lodge, it has been host to important conferences of India's history.
