Umium Lake lies some 15 km (9.5 mi) from Shillong tucked away amidst the scenic hills of Meghalaya. Created by damming the Umiam River in the early 1960s, the catchment area of this 10 sq km (3.9 sq mi) reservoir extends over 220 sq km (85 sq mi). The lake has become a major tourist attraction popular for water sports and adventure facilities, as well as a perennial favorite for picnicking. Blue water, green hills, and activities like boating, kayaking, and water cycling attract tourists from far and wide. Visitors pay fees per camera but you can take photos from camera phones.
