Sanchi Stupas, Sanchi
(4.7/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Admire remarkable Buddhist art and architecture at Sanchi Stupas, some of the best preserved early stupas in central India. Built between the 3rd century BC and the 12th century AD, these larged backed brick hemispherical dome house an image of the Buddha in their central chamber. The Great Stupa of Sanchi has exquisitely carved pillars and portals depicting episodes and images of Lord Buddha’s life. Surrounded by a stone balustrade with four impressive carved gateways facing each side of the world, the dome of the largest stupa has a parasol-like structure on the top symbolizing high status. This temple complex was the site of King Ashoka’s wedding to Devi who supervised the construction of the temples. • Visiting Sanchi Stupa dating back to 3 rd centuryB.C. was truly a visual treat and a spiritual experience. A great piece of art. The facial expressions of sculptures look so alive and tell the story of Buddha. The generations of artisans & British as well as Indian Archaeologists have worked passionately to preserve this World heritage site. Must take an Archaeology Dept approved guide who charges ₹470 . Takes about 2 hours to see the main Stupa.Must visit a small museum and a building at the entrance managed by Srilanka Sangha which has relics in underground vault of Buddha's chief desiples Sariputta & Mahamogglayan. For good photography should visit around sunrise or sunset. Should take children and expose them to our glorious past & culture. A beautiful site. A good MPTDC restaurant with decent food at the entrance.

  • One of the few surviving examples of the Mauryan era buildings, The Great Stupa is located in Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh. Being built over the relics of Lord Buddha, it was also a major pilgrimage site for the Buddhists. It was built during the 3rd century BC by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka and was later expanded by the Shunga and the Satavahana empires that followed.
