Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat, Rishikesh

4.5
#1 of 26 in Historic Sites in Dehradun District
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Witness a traditional Hindu prayer at Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat, one of the area's most-visited ceremonies along the river. Set atop a ghat, or flight of riverfront steps, the prayer involves chanted verses along with bells and drums played by devotees. You can visit and watch as large numbers of leaf boats, filled with flowers and topped with oil candles, are set afloat on the Ganges. Alternatively, stop by one of the many nearby stalls to grab a lantern of your own and add it to the flotilla. Note that two other holy rivers, the Saraswathy and the Yamuna, join with the Ganges here. Where to stay in Rishikesh

In the downtown area, river houses remain the most popular accommodations, with a few guesthouses and hostels located farther back from the sacred waters of the Ganges. Most visitors choose to stay upriver, in areas filled with pleasant ashrams, hostels, and hotels perched near the water in clusters. Arrange your accommodations in advance to ensure rooms that suit your style, budget, and reasons for being in this spiritual capital.

  • Worth it to to watch evening prayer...typically starts at 7:30 during summer time. Takes about 30 - 40 minutes long. Approach is from main road and walking via a bazaar. Average cleanliness.
  • Confluence of 3 rivers. The view of shivaliks is breathtaking. However it has been transformed into a market place making it so noisy and dirty. The beauty of the ghat is lost.
  • Ganga Aarti of this ghat is famous. You have to reach early to participate. You will fell blessed here. Also you will find nice food in market while walking to the ghat through market.
  • Good place to take bath in holy river Ganga if you don't know how to swim in "rivers" don't go too much inside else you ends with finishing your life.
  • Good place to see evening aarti and a fountain is also there. Good place to just sit at the banks of river and enjoy the cold water.
