Pahari Mandir, Ranchi

4.4
#2 of 10 in Sightseeing in Ranchi
Religious Site Tourist Spot
A charming imposing temple of Lord Shankara, another name for Lord Shiva, Pahari Mandir is located on the top of a huge Ranchi hill of altitude 2140 feet from sea level. Ranch hill was known earlier as Phansi Tongri and it is the place where freedom fighters were hanged to death. To remember the importance of this hill in the freedom movement, tricolor flag is unfurled on the Independence Days and Republic days.

The surroundings are picturesque and to reach the temple at the top of the mountain requires tapping up of more than 300 steps. Many devotees visit this place to make their wishes and also make the opportunity to thank Lord Shiva for the blessings. A bird’s view of the whole Ranchi city is possible from the temple premises and the view is really an enchanting eye pleasing experience. The trees of different species add to the beauty of the hill especially during the rainy season. During Shravan time, the devotees offer Jal (Dhara) to temple deity and the Shravan season is a major draw of visitors.
Pahari Mandir is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Ranchi Edition.

  • Good place to worship, great atmosphere, have been visiting this place for 15 years. Full of greenery around, peaceful place. One can see the one of the highest national flag of India, which is a proud moment. From the top we can see great views.
  • Offers great views, historical place . It's around 400 steps high, which can be climbed in 6 - 7 mins. The temple is a center of devotion and attraction for everyone who visits Ranchi or lives here
  • Mine was one of the thrilling experience. I had to climb the steps twice, one for the Darshan and second to bring back the helmet. I was totally exhausted after this experience but I loved it.
  • One of the best places to visit for peace of mind. The view from the top of the mountain is just amazing.
  • God Shiva is there.... Nice temple.... Good to see the city from this height..

Where to stay in Ranchi

For a city with relatively little tourist appeal, Ranchi offers a surprising selection of accommodations. The majority of these come in the form of small hotels and guesthouses close to the train station. Unfortunately, many budget-friendly options offer only basic amenities and maintain questionable standards of hygiene. For something more comfortable, consider the options along the northern section of Main Road, where you can find larger modern hotels, including global chain brands.
