Jagannath Temple, Puri

4.2
#1 of 203 in Things to do in Odisha
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Admire the striking complex of Jagannath Temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe. The current temple structure was built in 1161 by a local ruler, but it is believed that its origins date back more than 2,000 years. The main shrine, one of 120 temples within the complex, contains a wooden image of the presiding deity. Only Hindus are allowed onto the temple premises, but you can view the massive complex from the roof of a nearby library. A visit to Jagannath Temple represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Puri vacation builder to plot your vacation.

  • The great Jagannath Temple. Lots of miracles are here. Pilgrims from all over India and abroad are come here to pay their homage to lord Jagannath (I like a place and very good location very entertainment area.)
  • One of those temples that represents India and its culture. If you are in Orissa, a must visit. A guided tour is a must to understand the temple architecture, its history, related folklore and other intricacies. Spend atleast 2-3 hours in the premises to let that experience sink in. Check the timings of hoisting of the flag at the top of the tallest spire. Its an experience of a lifetime to watch a panda climb the spire and hoist the flag. One of the building on the opposite side is best for photography.
  • A great place for religious people. Excellent architecture of the temple. Keep time in hand to visit this temple. No mobile allowed. Beware of auto-rickshaw driver's, they charge 10 time more of the exact fair, bargain with them. Neat & clean.
  • Best ever experience of a temple. Astonishing mysteries and the best part is the evening flag-change ceremony and the foodies from Ananda bazaar.
  • 1. Awesome architecture 2. Spacious environment inside the temple premises 3. Greedy priests (each small temple has atleast one, while major spots have 4-5 priests acting as shopkeepers in a market) 4. Dirty and stinky, even with all the money flowing in; I don't know how people can digest the prasad when flies openly flaunt their possession over the stores.

Where to stay in Puri

With Puri such a vital place of pilgrimage for Hindus across the world, and tourists keen to witness the festivities and engage with the history of the place, the city offers a good selection of accommodations to suit its varied list of visitors. In the dense collection of streets around the temple, a few guesthouses and hotels provide good access to the main urban points of interest. Down by the coast, you'll find a variety of hotels offering sea views, with budget options usually set a little further back from the golden sands than the upmarket choices.
