Pataleshwar Cave Temple, Pune

(3.9/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
Visit Pataleshwar Cave Temple, a hermetic rock-cut complex dedicated to Hindu deities Pataleshwar and Shiva. Because of its construction during the Rashtrakuta period (700 to 800 CE), the site now enjoys protection as a religious monument. Explore the circular nandi mandapa, a pillared outdoor hall that stands in front of the cave. Outside of the basalt stone entryway hangs a brass bell, while the cube-shaped inner sanctum decorated with symbols of Shiva calls devotees to pray and make offerings. Visit the museum nearby, especially since it houses a peculiar Guinness World Record holder: a single grain of rice with 5,000 characters inscribed on it. • There is no entry fees for the small cavern/temple, and its also very quiet for city like pune. Infact, I was surprised to see students using the location as study spot.
  • A stop worth quite certainly no piece of jewelry however. Most people are rather come to to meet and entertain as the place provides some peace in the hustle and bustle of the city. The caves are very old, somewhat mystical. After 10min, one has seen it as well. Nice gimmicks.

  • A peaceful oasis in the heart of Pune. This rock cut temple is a hidden gem, literally. Carved out during the Rashtrakuta era, the temple is right next to the Junglee Maharaj temple on JM road. Though the temple is incomplete and may not be as beautiful or intricate as the Ellora caves, this temple has a charm of its own. The temple was carved down into the bedrock and most of the structure is hewn out of the same rock. Walk into the temple and it is cool and quiet. There will be a few regulars performing their pooja and a few sitting in meditation. It is a good place to spend a few moments in contemplation. Tip: You will not find car parking easily on the road here. Best option is to park elsewhere and take an auto to and from this temple.
  • Place of peace and serenity... The excavated Temple from single rock...compiles the effect of tranquillity and one great era....
  • Once u go inside u will feel that you are at remote location somewhere outside pune. Though its incomplete work done in ancient times but u feel peace there. Must visit site if you are living in heart of city.
  • I used to live in the Shivaji nagar, but never noticed that there is a awesome place like this just around me. There is a Lord Shiva's temple which is very very old, caves krafted into a nice temple. The inner place is very cold even in summers. Big garden infront of the temple. Must visit once. Enjoy!!! Keep smiling, Keep travelling!!!
  • One of most important historical place, the old shiva temple cave. Build top to bottom
