Pashan Lake, Pune

#5 of 11 in Nature in Pune
Pashan Lake is an artificial lake near the suburb of Pashan, about 12 km from the city center of Pune, India. The lake was built in the British era to accommodate the water requirement of the neighbourhood. The main inlet of the lake is a small rivulet, which is even controlled by the barrage located to the north of the lake. Pashan lake has a total catchment area of 40km2, and serves as a source of water to the old Pashan village, and the Governor's residence, as well. Recent urbanisation around the lake has led to the fall in the quality of the water.HistoryPashan lake is a man-made lake, built to accommodate the water requirements of the Pashan and Sutarwadi suburbs. The lake was once a source of drinking water, but the recent boom in urbanisation and silting of the lake has degraded the water and made it unfit for drinking. The lake served as a source of water to old Pashan village, for growing crops and to the nearby Governor's house. The lake and its surrounding area attracts migratory birds and so is popular spot for bird watchers. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has constructed a 300-metre footpath called the Nature Trail alongside the lake. It is constructed along the western shore of Pashan lake. Also, PMC has built a bamboo plantation and a wall alongside the lake to protect it and attract birds.Environmental concernsRecently, deforestation on nearby hills has caused heavy silt formation resulting in decrease in the depth of the lake. Ipomea weed is also cited as a major cause of lake's deterioration as it prohibits the growth of other plants. Also washing of trucks in the area contributes to the pollution by adding oil and petrol to the sewage. PMC estimates that 40,000 people could be provided with drinking water at per capita cost of as compared with the existing per capita cost of.

  • Peaceful place amidst chaos of city. Prefer visiting in evening or morning. Good for bird watching as well. A small bridge is also there for perfect pictures. Good place for a walk and photography. A shiva Temple is also nearby.
  • Peaceful place amidst the busy city. The best time to visit the lake would be in evening/during sunset. It is a good place for evening strolls. But beware of insects and worms as they are present in the area but you may not notice then easily. Also there are multiple ways to reach the lake. A Shiva temple is also present nearby the lake which is frequented by localites for evening Aarti.
  • Beautiful and clean place. Good for photography. Needs better mauntainance. Kids section should be upgraded. Security should be upgraded. Visit for a calm evening!
  • Very nice place to visit with natural beauty #Photography #Birds
  • Good place to walk around. Not preferred by me after sunset because of threat of bitten by snake and mosquitoes. Nice place to have photography

Where to stay in Pune

South-east of the main train station sit most of the accommodations on offer in Pune, with the choice largely revolving around standard hotels featuring small pools and restaurants. You can find some more luxurious options in the more spread-out areas to the north of the city center, and along the rivers that flow through town. Hostels and guesthouses provide budget-friendly options, with the bulk located near the university accommodation districts, and the side streets of the older parts of town.
