Learn colonial history and relax under palm trees at Viper Island, an old British jail for political prisoners and convicts in waters deep into South Andaman between Flat Bay and Navy Bay. Reached by ferry from Port Blair, the island offers a profound insight into British penal colonial system and a number of scenic picnic spots. Check out a domed dilapidated red brick prison administration building on the hilltop and the site of infamous Viper Island Gallows, a beam inside the building from which they hanged prisoners. A number of tables detail deaths of Indian patriots against British occupation tell a story about struggle for independence. The island was named after a British ship wrecked near the island in 1789 so you do not need to worry about snakes.   • To reach this island, one needs to board a ferry from the jetty near Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex. After a ride of around 45 minutes, the ferry reaches Viper Islands. This island was used as punishing ...  more »
  • I visited to this island of thinking of North Bay and Ross island. As i reach this island i seen that this island is very dirty, zero maintenance island. I never suggest anyone to visit this place.

Many year before the construction of Cellular Jail the island served as the Torture House of the British Raj ... Most of the buildings have ruined except Gallows which reside atop a hillock ... All of the travel agents will keep this place at the last of list in the one day package trips originating from Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park
  • people having zeal to visit historical sites must visit. others may not love it that much. much of the island was damaged due to earthquake
