Once a former governor of Pondicherry, the Statue of Dupleix memorializes the French recognition of Joseph’ Dupleix’s contribution to India and France. Originally installed in 1870, 126 years after Dupleix left Pondicherry, the statue can now be found alongside Promenade Beach. The 2.88m (9.5 ft) tall statue shows Dupleix in a commanding stance, with his left hand on the hilt of his sword, and his right holding a plan of Pondicherry. Prominent features of the statue include the Curt dress, as well as the bag wig and long riding boots. Restoration of the statue was undertaken in 2014.
