Karnala Fort, Panvel

Karnala fort is a hill fort in Raigad district about 10 km from Panvel city. Currently it is a protected place lying within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. It was a fort of strategic importance as it overlooked the Bor pass which connected the Konkan coast to the interior of Maharashtra and was the main trade route between these areas.HistoryThe fort was likely constructed before 1400, under Devagiri Yadavs(1248–1318) and the Tughlaq rulers (1318–1347), Karnala was the capital of the north Konkan districts of their respective empires. It later fell under the command of the Gujarat Sultanate but in 1540 was taken over by Nizam Shah of Ahmednagar. The Gujarat sultans then requested the help of the Dom Francisco de Menenzes the commanding officer of the Portuguese at Bassien (modern day Vasai) to win it back. He ordered 500 of his soldiers to Karnala fort and they were able to capture it. The fort was left in charge of the Gujarat Sultanate but with Portuguese garrisons. The Gujarat sultans fled to Vasai, surrendering the fort to the Portuguese. The loss of Karnala enraged Nizam Shah, who sent 5,000 men to reclaim the fort and the surrounding countryside. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the Portuguese continued to hold the fort. Deciding that the forts of Sangli and Karnala were of little strategic value, however, the Portuguese viceroy agreed to return them to Nizam Shah for an annual payment of Rs. 17,500 (or 5,000 gold Pardoas).

  • perfect getaway place from stress and to do some trekking. the trek might be a bit difficult as its wet and there is a steep incline but its all worth it once you reach at the top of the fort. the view is just mesmerizing and as you reach there you will be in awe by looking at the beauty of the nature at the top the mountain and please wear some shoes that are good for trekking and bring water supply and snack like banana, chocolate bar to provide energy. also don't forget to register yourself (name, mobile no. etc) on the register that is present at the check post at beginning of the trek and take the emergency number from the the check post.
  • It is a beautiful place with greenery all around and lies away from the noise and pollution of the city. There are two ways for trekking- the easy one and the tough one. The people who are more familiar and comfortable with trekking can go for the latter one while beginners can choose the former. The path is such that one needs to move to the left of the entrance and then follow the road taking the pump house as the origin. Arrows displayed on the trees need to be followed further.  For the challenging route, one needs to move to the right from the entrance which will lead to the forest directly. There will be some streams and waterfalls on the way over. The elevation is of 375m which is not at all difficult to climb. Once the base area of the forest is reached, there are railings to climb.
  • Trek to this fort may take you anywhere between 2 to 3 hours...! Difficulty level is medium throughout although at some places the trek really becomes difficult due to Rocky and narrow paths which sometimes also are very steep...! Going in the rainy season is only a good idea for the thrill seekers..! Climbing the top of the fort is difficulty due to semi dilapidated state of the approach way...! Carry adequate water if planning to visit this place..! Binoculars is a must...! Strictly not for people who are lazy and comfort loving... The view from the top of the fort is breath-taking..! Going early in the morning is advisable as afternoon's can prove to be very hot..! Beware of notorious monkeys😂
  • Best place for trekkers! You need to purchase tickets from the concerned authority. Rather easy to trek, however, take proper care while trekking. Most important, bring your cooked food and water as needed. Few spots are really risky avoid if do not have guts.
  • The fort has got awesome rock structure looking like Shiv lingam. Very nice views of nearby region. Nice structure.
