Ruin Tourist Spot
Karnala fort is a hill fort in Raigad district about 10 km from Panvel city. Currently it is a protected place lying within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. It was a fort of strategic importance as it overlooked the Bor pass which connected the Konkan coast to the interior of Maharashtra and was the main trade route between these areas.HistoryThe fort was likely constructed before 1400, under Devagiri Yadavs(1248–1318) and the Tughlaq rulers (1318–1347), Karnala was the capital of the north Konkan districts of their respective empires. It later fell under the command of the Gujarat Sultanate but in 1540 was taken over by Nizam Shah of Ahmednagar. The Gujarat sultans then requested the help of the Dom Francisco de Menenzes the commanding officer of the Portuguese at Bassien (modern day Vasai) to win it back. He ordered 500 of his soldiers to Karnala fort and they were able to capture it. The fort was left in charge of the Gujarat Sultanate but with Portuguese garrisons. The Gujarat sultans fled to Vasai, surrendering the fort to the Portuguese. The loss of Karnala enraged Nizam Shah, who sent 5,000 men to reclaim the fort and the surrounding countryside. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the Portuguese continued to hold the fort. Deciding that the forts of Sangli and Karnala were of little strategic value, however, the Portuguese viceroy agreed to return them to Nizam Shah for an annual payment of Rs. 17,500 (or 5,000 gold Pardoas).

  • If you love trekking then this place is for you. It took us 2-3 hours to reach at the top and the view you get after reaching is amazing. Make sure you take plenty of water and food. I am attaching some photos that I took from the top. Enjoy!
  • A very good place to visit during rainy season. Just 1 hour away from Mumbai city. Very refreshing. Take approx 1-1.30 hours to reach on top of fort. Endurance level - medium difficulty level - easy. Shoes with good grip is must, as soil become slippery.
  • The Karnala Fort & the Bird Sanctuary: You may not be able to sight birds but the trekking part is challenging & fulfilling. The panoramic view from the fort top is great. Very old people should avoid trekking here. It is more dangerous while getting down. My views are that of a common man. I am 60 years old. I enjoyed thoroughly. I slipped twice with minor bruises. Not advisable for people with knee pain. One should go in groups. The old & the children should be accompanied by caring young people. Carry sufficient water & snacks. It is a strict no litter zone. You have show what you carry up and what you bring down. All empty bottles & empty plastic pouches are rechecked & counted. Best time to start trekking is early morning.
  • The view from the fort is breathtaking. Many young as well as energetic senior people were to be seen. This is a very good place for people to start there trekking journey!
  • To be at this place feels truly blissful. Monsoon is the best time to visit as per my experience. It's quite and peaceful here. Cleanliness is well maintained too.
