Jata Shankar, Pachmarhi

Categories: Caves, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.1/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web
Tucked away in a deep ravine, Jata Shankar is a popular pilgrimage spot dedicated to Shiva. It features a group of stalagmites worshiped by Hindu believers as natural lingams. The name of the shrine translates to “the hair of Shiva,” since Shankar is another name of the god and jata means hair. Legend has it that the god lost his hair while running from a devotee who tried to turn him to ashes--with the power granted to him by none else but Shiva himself. See the dripstone formations that symbolize the hair and a divine snake with hundred heads. The cave also houses manmade idols and two small ponds. • The cave of Jatashankar and the route to cave boasts of various natural marvels. Taking a guide to the caves is highly recommended.
