Chaturbhuj Temple, Orchha

(4.4/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
Perched on a high stone platform and dedicated to the four-armed incarnation of Vishnu, Chaturbhuj Temple is known for its spacious and well-lit interior so uncommon in Hindu shrines. Madhukar Shah erected the temple in the second half of the 16th century. The original intention was to protect the idols of Lord Rama dreamt by the Shah’s wife, queen Rani, but according to legend these idols didn’t want to leave the queen’s palace. Since Madhukar worshiped Lord Krishna, the temple today caters to the followers of the Krishna-Bhakti cult. Climb a flight of steep steps to reach the temple. Notice the intricate ornamentation on the exterior and lotus emblems on the central dome ceiling. • This temple is very different from all the others we have seen in India. He has some patina of abandonment and loneliness, but it really goes. Visited it twice in the morning and in the evening. In the morning we were virtually the only visitors in the evening in the temple was quite crowded. It was very interesting to climb onto the roof of the temple, which offers interesting views.
