Avalanche Lake, Ooty
Categories: Bodies of Water, Nature & Parks
At Avalanche Lake, observe surrounding untamed subtropical forests full of blooming orchids, rhododendrons, and magnolias. The lake was created in the 1800s when a sudden destructive flow of snow from the mountains, triggered by glacial movements, covered the area and gradually melted. Now, green verdant woods shelter many species of animal and plant life, including over 2,700 species of flowering plants, as well as wild animals like leopards, tigers, sloth bears, gaurs, and barking deer. The forest department near the lake offers van or jeep tours for eager visitors, with discounts for students and children.
