Teri Dam, New Tehri

(4.2/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
Nestled at the foothills of Himalayan mountains, Teri Dam is one of the world’s tallest dams and the tallest one in India. The construction of the dam started in 1978 and it was completed in 2012. This rock and earth-filled embankment rises 260 m (855 ft) in height, creating a huge reservoir. The project has been contested by human-rights activists--for the relocation of 100,000 local people--and environmentalists--who question the geological stability of the dam. Still, it is one of the region’s top attractions. The walk along the embankment offers scenic views and numerous photo opportunities.
