Gandhi Smriti, New Delhi

(4.3/5 based on 1,400+ reviews on the web)
Pay a visit to Gandhi Smriti, the house where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last months of his life, before being assassinated here in 1948. Built in 1928 by a member of the esteemed Birla family, who often welcomed Gandhi into his home, the building was sold to the Indian government in 1971. Today it stands as a memorial and museum dedicated to the life of Gandhi and his last moments on Earth. Take a tour of the house and grounds to admire numerous items from his life, or view the "Martyr's Column," a monument marking the exact spot in the garden where he was standing when he was shot. For travelers who use our world travel planner, New Delhi holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Gandhi Smriti and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • The monument is minimalist, a garden for contemplation. A lovely and fitting memorial for one of the most important leaders of the 20th century.
  • Our Tuk Tuk driver brought us here and we'd not even known it had existed. A great stop over for 30 minutes to see the place in which Gandhi took his last steps while learning a little more about Gand...  more »
  • The last remains of Gandhi. The Raj Ghat is the final resting place of the Indian politician known as Mahatma Gandhi, one of the most respected leaders of all time. Assassinated on 31 January 1948. The grounds are clean and pretty, are history is traced, with details and letters that can send and receive. You will have access to the place where he prayed, and this is where who had carried it out are last course before being cowardly assassinated. This attraction is free, you will only to provide your name name and origin to access. You'll see small squirrels which will delight the little ones. A must for total immersion.

  • Place where Gandhiji stayed for the last 144 days of his life and was martyred by Nathuram Godse. His personal belongings, last walk pathway and the place where he was shot has been properly identified and preserved. A fitting tribute to Father of the nation. A special feature is the gong(bell) presented by Indonesia which depicts all national flags.
  • Most favourite song of Mahatma Gandhi ( BAPU ) Vaishnav Jan to tene kahiye Jay peerh paraaye janneyray Par dukkhey upkar karey teeyey, man abhiman na anney ray Sakal lokma Sahuney bandhey, Ninda Na karye kainee ray Baach kaachh, Man nischal Raakhey, dhan-dhan jananee tainee ray Samdrishi nay trishna tyagee, par-stree jaynay mat ray Vivihva thaki asatya na bolay, par-dhan nav jhaley haath ray Moh maaya vyaayey nahin Jeynay, dridth vairagya jana manma ray Ram-nam-shoom taalee laagee, Sakal teerth seyna tanma ray Vanloohee nay kapat rahit chhay, Kaam, Krodh nivarya ray Bhane Narsinhyo tainoo darshan karta kul ekotair taarya re.
  • Respectfully clean and very quiet. There were a lot of boards outside that told of Gandhi's life and the garden showed Gandhi's last footsteps and where he was assassinated. I side the Birla house was a large museum that documented both Gandhi's accomplishments and his last thoughts and experiences. I found the location to be very emotional and inspirational.
  • I like here, but it was terrible experience as well. I came here by auto-rickshaw and the driver, who looked like very kind at first, tried to take us unknown store. Be careful if here is one of sightseeing places which the driver suggested. Their shops should be around here. Also, there were many fake polices who wear casual clothes. In my case, two fake polices said to me, "Hey, we're police. Stop." And they followed us for a while. What I was very surprised was that one of them was Europeans and Americans, who has white skin and short orange hair and is not Indian, the other is Indian tho.
  • Formerly known Birla Bhawan where Gandhiji was shot dead
