  • The Delhi Haat is a great place to buy scarves, fabrics, spices, toys, shoes, purses, paintings and other memories of India. Despite the cramped size there are a large number of shops with various items of local culture. Prices vary between the fair and the bait for tourists, and you have to be able to negotiate something that virtually all sellers are willing to do without any difficulty: it's part of the joke. Be careful, however, not to fall into the conversation of the smartest, or less unscrupulous. To realize an unwary visitor, will not make any ceremony before making up stories compelling in order to push their goods at prices sometimes higher than in more structured markets. If you buy two pieces, they will tell you to take three because it is a number that brings good luck. But if you ask three, then four are needed to guarantee it, and so on. Get ready also to hear them tell that "today is my last day here, tomorrow I go back to my town, so I am doing a special discount for you"--that's the most common conversation. Don't be alarmed if, between two similar products, precisely the one you prefer is what "was made by my mother" and, therefore, more expensive. Of course, there are honest sellers, but the tendency is to try to get the buyer in conversation, especially if it shows in fact interested. Often they are inconvenient and it's hard to go three steps without feeling cornered by an insistent attempt to push some tissue "very rare" or something made with a wood "expensive"--which, interestingly, he's willing to sell just for you by a price below the market. Visit the Delhi Haat well worth it, but knowing what you're looking for so as not to lose time. Resist the advances of the vendors, haggle and search. It is possible to find the same "exclusive" drawing on several different tents for prices ranging far beyond 100%. There are fabrics and scarves in profusion; never buy in the first place to stop. And, if you are not interested in a product, don't feel bad in turn away after repeat for the third time I didn't want to. Sometimes this is the only way to avoid the huge embarrassment caused by sellers prepared to never accept one, two, three "no" s.
