St. James' Church, National Capital Territory of Delhi

St. James' (also known as Skinner's Church) is an Anglican church in Delhi, India, built in 1836 by Colonel James Skinner. It is one of the oldest churches in the city, and part of the Church of North India Diocese of Delhi. It is situated near Kashmiri Gate, at the intersection of Church Road and Lothian Road. It was the church the Viceroy of India, attended until the Cathedral Church of the Redemption, near Gurudwara Rakab Ganj, was built in 1931. The only other church of that era, the St. Stephen's Church, at Fatehpuri, Delhi was built in 1867. Behind the church is the bungalow of British Commissioners of Delhi, William Frazer, who is also buried in the church graveyard.HistorySubsequently, he built the edifice at his own expense of 95,000 Rupees, under the design of Major Robert Smith. The construction started in 1826, and was completed in 1836. The basic design of Renaissance Revival style church is on a cruciform plan (Greek Cross), with three porticoed porches, elaborate stained glass windows and a central octagonal dome, similar to that of the Florence Cathedral in Italy. It was consecrated on 21 November 1836 by the bishop of Calcutta Daniel Wilson.

  • Reached the place around 2pm but had to wait outside till 2.30 as it was lunch hours. There was no one in the place except the security guard during my visit. The construction head resemblance of Mughal architecture.I spent 5-10 mins inside the church and 5 mins walking outside.Unlike many other archaeological buildings be around Delhi Authorities are preserving this structure properly, kudos to them.Persian scripts in the cemetery really amused me.
  • The Catholic Church, also known as the Roman Catholic Church, is the largest Christian church, with more than 1.29 billion members worldwide.[4] As one of the oldest religious institutions in the world, it has played a prominent role in the history and development of Western civilisation.[5]Headed by the Bishop of Rome, known as the Pope, the church's doctrines are summarised in the Nicene Creed. Its central administration, the Holy See, is in the Vatican City, enclavedwithin Rome, Italy.
  • I am writing this review sitting on the historic steps of the church itself. It is overwhelmingly peaceful here. Thanks to a power failure, the stained glass inside looks mesmerising. I clicked some photographs inside the church unaware that it was not allowed. However the caretaker has allowed me to keep them for "personal memories" but strictly not for posting on social media.
