High Altitude Zoo, Nainital

3.9
#1 of 11 in Outdoors in Nainital District
Zoo / Aquarium Nature / Park
Situated 2,100 m (6,900 ft) above sea level, High Altitude Zoo hosts several endangered Himalayan species. Thanks to the high-altitude location, these animals have a chance to thrive while also providing the opportunity for research and rehabilitation. Observe animals like the Royal Bengal tiger, Tibetan wolf, leopard cat, and Himalayan bear at this attraction, and remember to look up, to spot the variety of high-altitude birds, such as the Lady Amherst pheasant and rose ringed parakeet. Although you can access the zoo by road, expect to do a little uphill trekking when visiting. Consider adopting one of the animals to help cover their rehabilitation costs. Put High Altitude Zoo on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Nainital tourist route planner.

  • its such a big zoo but you have to climb upwards 45 degree roads to go to each cage , going with small kids can be difficult.  more »
  • Go here if you have lots of time and you have nothing else to visit . It is too costly as compared to other places in areas and you have to walk a lot and you won;t be seeing any new animals here. I w...  more »
  • One can easily say that what extraordinary there, it's just another zoo, but as the name suggests, you are gonna experience a large variety of animals at high altitude, that makes it interesting.  more »

  • A superbly planned & extremely well kept public zoo. It has lot of uncommon species. Blue Sheep and Red Panda are few to name. The administration personals are always attentive in its maintenance. All the enclosures are neat & clean. There are seating places at regular interval. It has a souvenir shop and privately run cafeteria for snacks & tea. Kudos to leadership of concerned DFO & his team for its neatness.
  • Zoo at the higher altitude is just amazing. You can see several wild animals. You have a chance of seeing rare species. Also, zoo is clean and maintained.
  • Good place to take the kids to. However have to trek a bit on height and take the shuttle from base of the hill. Worth the effort though not for elderly or people with low stamina.
  • Nice place to visit with family in Nainital also a cool place in Uttarakhand. Neat & clean Zoo than other Zoological Parks. You need to go for hangouts if you love nature, animals, birds.
  • The collection of animals is great. Specially the leopards at the top of the mountain. Needs at least 2 hours to go around. The steep slops make it difficult. However it's worth a visit.

Where to stay in Nainital

Nainital boasts a good number of accommodations, with the popular hill station combining the old and the new, the upmarket and the simple across its slopes. Many of the more refined options occupy commanding positions by the lake, or use height to their advantage, gaining extensive, postcard-worthy views up the hill to the northwest. Mall Road remains the place to look for the majority of accommodations in town, with a fair set of hotels, homestays, and guesthouses.
