High Altitude Zoo, Nainital

(600+ reviews on the web)
Zoo / Aquarium
Situated 2,100 m (6,900 ft) above sea level, High Altitude Zoo hosts several endangered Himalayan species. Thanks to the high-altitude location, these animals have a chance to thrive while also providing the opportunity for research and rehabilitation. Observe animals like the Royal Bengal tiger, Tibetan wolf, leopard cat, and Himalayan bear at this attraction, and remember to look up, to spot the variety of high-altitude birds, such as the Lady Amherst pheasant and rose ringed parakeet. Although you can access the zoo by road, expect to do a little uphill trekking when visiting. Consider adopting one of the animals to help cover their rehabilitation costs. Put High Altitude Zoo on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Nainital tourist route planner.

  • A superbly planned & extremely well kept public zoo. It has lot of uncommon species. Blue Sheep and Red Panda are few to name. The administration personals are always attentive in its maintenance. All the enclosures are neat & clean. There are seating places at regular interval. It has a souvenir shop and privately run cafeteria for snacks & tea. Kudos to leadership of concerned DFO & his team for its neatness.
  • Good place to take the kids to. However have to trek a bit on height and take the shuttle from base of the hill. Worth the effort though not for elderly or people with low stamina.
  • Touring with kids , pay a visit here . A zoo is already a fun spot for kids . Add to it some altitude and nicely laid out place in the lap of nature , you're going to have an unforgettable experience. It is a high altitude zoo and they mean it when they named it thus . There is a food court too at the base and you can recharge yourself with some treat . Great views of the city are added bonus you get .
  • AWESOME EXPERIENCE :)  This Zoo is a must visit in Nainital and is one of the most beautiful natural environments, i have seen in a long time. The Zoo is situated in a very high altitude and climbing up is a task. The Zoo is well maintained and one can see a lot of animals in close proximity.
  • The collection of animals is great. Specially the leopards at the top of the mountain. Needs at least 2 hours to go around. The steep slops make it difficult. However it's worth a visit.
