Saint Philomena Church, Mysuru (Mysore)

Categories: Churches, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.1/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web
Admire the conversation between East and West at Saint Philomena Church, an attractively designed and atmospheric Catholic church. Constructed in 1936, the place of worship remains one of the largest such buildings in the country, with its twin towers and traditional cross-shaped floor plan taking particular influence from Cologne's cathedral. The striking Neo-Gothic exterior dominates the surrounding urban area, while the interiors showcase fine examples of the blend of Indian and European influences characteristic of the colonial era--note some of the female statues wearing local traditional dress. Our Mysuru (Mysore) travel itinerary maker makes visiting Saint Philomena Church and other Mysuru (Mysore) attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Nice place to take pictures. Don'tv think the inside of church was open when we visited in 13th oct as there was some renovation going on.
  • When we visited the church was under renovation, so teh interiors are full of constuction workers and barriers. But the exterior design is reminiscent of European churches. Would love to visit again o...  read more »
  • This is a very magnificent church. During my visit, part of the church was under maintenance. So, assess inside the church was not possible.
  • If you're traveling from Bangalore to Mysore, St. Philomena's Church is the first tourist place stopover at Mysore. The huge Church has an ethereal feeling, and people of all faiths kneel down and pray at the pews for a few moments and carry on. It was built over 100 years ago, almost entirely by donations from the Roman Catholic Europeans who resided in Mysore then. The names of donors are nearly engraved in the side walls. The architectural masterpiece is intricately designed with passion, fervour and purpose. You get a sense of the inner mind getting healed after just a few minutes inside the Church in prayerful thoughts and cries. The statues, donation pit area, Christ's statues... are all very touching!
  • A nicely constructed French Gothic Church. Second biggest in India. Note: The closing time is 7:30 pm - 8 p.m if you want to make a quick visit
  • This is amongst the tallest church in the world. Yet its architecture is an great example amongst the churches . it gives you a calm yet faithful experience. The jewel of Mysore
  • I feel very fortunate to have been to this very beautiful Church. I was returning from Coorg after a weekend well spent there. Although the Church is in the midst of the hustle bustle of the beautiful Mysore city, the moment I entered the Church it was very calm and soothing. A must go if visiting Mysore.
  • Unique (for Mysuru), awe inspiring architecture. Calm ambiance. Wonderful place to visit, no matter a believer or not!
