Hazarduari Palace, Murshidabad
Categories: Specialty Museums, Museums
Reputedly one of the seven wonders of India, Hazarduari Palace holds one of the biggest collections of antiquities in the country, which includes the world’s second largest chandelier. McLeod Duncan built the Doric-style “palace of thousand doors” under the auspices of Mubarak Ali Khan (Nawab of Bengal) in the 19th century. The one thousand doors--of which 900 are false--were part of a cunning plan to confuse the enemy. See marble statues and oil paintings by Italian, Flemish, and French artists, old maps and manuscripts, weapons and thrones. Since 1985, the palace is under care of the Indian Archaeological Survey boasting a collection of over 4,700 items.
