Powai Lake, Mumbai

3.3
#4 of 16 in Nature in Mumbai
Stroll around Powai Lake and take in the peaceful atmosphere of the man-made lake, which once provided drinking water for the local city. During construction, the catchment of the lake covered an area of 2.1 sq km (0.8 sq mi) and up to 12 m (39 ft) deep. While the lake's depth remains the same, its catchment area now covers 6.1 sq km (2.35 sq mi). Look for wildlife along the banks, including crocodiles, white-throated kingfishers, spot-billed ducks, woolly-necked storks, butterflies, honeybees, and more. If you catch the right season, you'll see a carpet of pink balsam bushes encircling the lake. Plan your visit to Powai Lake and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Mumbai trip itinerary planner.

  • Good place to sit and relax with few options of roadside food available. If watching someone make out is a horrible scene for you kindly do not go here. There are crocodiles in the lake so better don't try to act smart. Good breeze and calm place to relax.
  • Good lake. But all with youngsters only. The view is also good. U can only see couples sitting there. U can have good time.
  • Located in JVLR. The place is in entire mess. If you go near the post of the lake, there is complete garbage. It is not at all a place to visit if u want to spend some quality time. The only use of this place is morning walk by near by residents. If garbage is cleaned, it can be good place to chill which provides sea side view.
  • Well I would have given it a 5 but I m not a big fan of crocodiles in the lake. That's right! There are sign boards present. Apart from this the lake is a real natural beauty. Do visit around sunset time. See the pic that I'd clicked during my visit.
  • The term sewage disposal reservoir seems more appropriate to this 'accumulation of water'. It's often covered by a notorious weed and the pavement alongside the banks is in disarray and an infamous haunt of couples doing what not to each other. Certainly NOT worth visiting. Unless you are that sort of couple or a pervert.

Where to stay in Mumbai

In a cramped city like Mumbai, finding a budget hotel can present a serious challenge. Many business travelers and tourists choose to stay in South Mumbai, the oldest and richest neighborhood in the city. Accommodations here put you close to most top museums, restaurants, bars, art galleries, and shops. Proximity to major attractions comes at a premium price, though--not surprising for one of the most expensive cities in Asia. If you plan to visit on a tight budget, look for options near railway stations, but prepare for low-grade rooms and few or no amenities.
