Global Vipassana Pagoda, Mumbai

4.6
#23 of 443 in Things to do in Mumbai
Take some time out of your busy travel itinerary to slow down and reflect at Global Vipassana Pagoda, a meditation hall topped with an impressive spire covered in real gold. Even if you do not meditate, the grand architecture of this attraction alone warrants a visit. Look for a large crystal on the pinnacle, which covers the world's largest stone dome built without supporting pillars. When you go, also look for a pagoda dome containing Buddha relics, library and study rooms, and a museum dedicated to the life of the Buddha. The complex also offers meditation courses. Check the attraction's website beforehand, as visitors are only allowed to enter during strict periods. • An oasis of peace near the bustling city of Mumbai. Located near Essel Funworld, it is a place which has a calming effect on your senses. The beautiful pagoda is a treat for your eyes, the clean air b...  more »

  • Its a very peaceful place to be. Quite surroundings, good management, best place for meditation. The only disappointment is that you can’t go inside the pagoda. You need a 10 day meditation training to go inside and meditate. But you can still see what’s inside through their viewing gallery. Below the pagoda are some paintings depicting the life of Buddha, Which is amazing! There is a food court next to the pagoda, but the food is horrible! You can request a wheelchair is required, also there is a car available from ferry to pagoda and return.
  • Amazing place this place can really refresh ones mood. One must try a meditation session there its very peaceful. Besides that the architecture and the view is just awesome. If you visit make sure you roam about the place check our the amazing view of the sea. If you visit there and have a drone make sure you take a drone shot of this place it will really be awesome. There's a small snack shop there that sells ice creams etc
  • Pagoda is a meditation hall. At a time 10k people can meditate together. Tourist can learn meditation in small meditation hall beside the main hall. Neat and clean place, nice place for family visits. It has gardens, water fountains, Ashoka pillar look a like, meditation hall, Art gallery, Photo gallery, Gift shop It also got food court at basement, food here is cheap and of good quality. Timings are 9am to 6:30pm
  • The place seems glorious and attractive from afar but is empty from within. Literally. It contains nothing but a couple of portraits of the founders. It's a great place for meditating and if you want some peace and quiet. But not so much as a tourist spot. It's better to come early in morning, sit for a while in peace and then head out to Essel World/Water Kingdom where there's absolute lack of these very things.
  • This is the best place in terms of worship, hangout, peace that I have ever visit till now. The architecture is really outstanding. The place is situated near Gorai beach. Also, it is situated beside Essel world. The best way to travel here is to go by a ferry which costs ₹50 for one-way trip. This is a meditation centre which follows rules & regulations laid down by Lord Gautam Buddha. A splendid masterpiece of Lord Buddha statue is also present here. Also, this place has a huge bell. Visitors are allowed to ring the bell with a help of big bamboo stick hanging around it. One must visit this place at least in his/her lifetime...

Where to stay in Mumbai

In a cramped city like Mumbai, finding a budget hotel can present a serious challenge. Many business travelers and tourists choose to stay in South Mumbai, the oldest and richest neighborhood in the city. Accommodations here put you close to most top museums, restaurants, bars, art galleries, and shops. Proximity to major attractions comes at a premium price, though--not surprising for one of the most expensive cities in Asia. If you plan to visit on a tight budget, look for options near railway stations, but prepare for low-grade rooms and few or no amenities.
