One of the oldest and most revered sanctuaries in the city, Hedavde Mahalaxmi Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu’s wife--the Hindu goddess of beauty, wealth, and prosperity. A story goes that the temple was built in the 19th century on a spot where the statue of the goddess was found after she appeared in a dream of a local goldsmith. Since the goddess is venerated in every household, the temple is always packed with worshipers chanting sacred hymns. Watch the exhilarated children pushing around at the entrance to feed the pigeons. During festivals, the statue of the goddess is shrouded in bright colored silk sari, and adorned with green and golden bracelets.
