Haji Ali Mosque, Mumbai (Bombay)

4.0
#6 of 47 in Historic Sites in Mumbai (Bombay)
Landmark Religious Site
A representative example of Indo-Islamic architecture, Haji Ali Mosque dates back to the 15th century, erected to commemorate a prosperous merchant who gave up all his material possessions in order to make a pilgrimage to Mecca. A causeway connects the mosque with the rest of the world, but during high tides, water submerges this ramp and renders it inaccessible. Centuries old, the entire construction is slowly succumbing to erosion, mainly due to saline winds and more than two million visitors per year. • One of the most peaceful place on earth and it's a must visit to enjoy the spirit of GOD. It's a 500m walk to the main hall and the walk is on the pebbles. The Pilgrimage is magical and magnificent. The nice songs sung at the outside the hall shall make your soul at peace...
  • One of the best place to visit in Mumbai. Great sacred place in the middle of sea. When the tides are low you will be able to visit it via a path which submerges when high tide.
  • One of the holiest Sufi of Islam. But this place needs to be reviewed with some reality check aspects also. The place is heaven for beggars of kind. You would find most of them sitting on the sea walk way and some at the entrance of sea walk way and dargah respectively. For Cleanliness only 1 star for the place and its surroundings. Very worst level of cleanliness you can expect. And the current dargah structure needs serious overhauling and the work is carried out at a snail pace speed. When there is a high tide and when you are crossing the sea walk way, you will find local slum kids waiting for your foot wear to get washed with the wave and will demand 100-200 Rupees to give it back to you. Some times more than that. And there you will find them exchanging harsh and bad words with the pilgrims. And I am also surprised to see that the sea walk way still submerge during high tides and this phenomena is same since last couple of years. Don't the management ever thought of raising the height of the sea walk way since this long years to make it accessible 24x7 for people at large. ??? The only place I loved is the mosque at the entrance of walk way. Clean and maintained.
  • One of the most beautiful place on the Sea shore🌊🌊 in Mumbai. Awesome place to hang out with friends and family..
  •  The spectacular Haji Ali Dargah is built offshore, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway that gets submerged at high tide. You’ll find the Mahalaxmi Racecourse right opposite the mosque.

Where to stay in Mumbai (Bombay)

In a cramped city like Mumbai, finding a budget hotel can present a serious challenge. Many business travelers and tourists choose to stay in South Mumbai, the oldest and richest neighborhood in the city. Accommodations here put you close to most top museums, restaurants, bars, art galleries, and shops. Proximity to major attractions comes at a premium price, though--not surprising for one of the most expensive cities in Asia. If you plan to visit on a tight budget, look for options near railway stations, but prepare for low-grade rooms and few or no amenities.
