Flora Fountain, Mumbai (Bombay)

3.6
#35 of 130 in Sightseeing in Mumbai (Bombay)
Fountain Landmark
Admire an exquisitely carved Roman goddess atop Flora Fountain, a neo-classical and Gothic revival fountain in Hutatma Chowk Square. Inaugurated in 1869 by the Agri-Horticultural Society of Western India to honor a British colonial administrator, the fountain was sculpted in specially imported Portland stone. Surrounded by green shrubs in a circular garden, the fountain makes a popular tourist attraction and a particularly nice sight at night. Named after a daughter-in-law of a Jewish businessman in Mumbai, the fountain has long been a landmark of the city, and is now surrounded by skyscrapers. • Business district of Mumbai with a great location. Located at 5-10 min walking distance from Churchgate and CST railway stations. Has some very cheap eating options as well as good fine dining options, finding good dining options should not be a problem except for public holidays as it's commercial area. The area also has Starbucks and ZARA and is located at 5-10 min walking distance to least 3 movie theatres (Eros, Sterling and Regal). For book lovers, the area also a book store and street vendors selling books at cheap rates.
  • Nice monument. It's been renovated. But still needs attention. Needs to be highlighted & keep some benches.
  • A place of historical significance, a landmark in the heart of the city! Though it's a monument from the times that India would prefer to forget, it's a magnificent piece of work nevertheless. It's worth appreciating that the authorities are sprucing it up. I hope to see a much more awe inspiring version of it once completed.
  • It's a great place with many good places to eat around it. A stone's throw from Churchgate Station, this place is famed for having booksellers around it. Drive a hard bargain and you can walk away with best selling titles at really cheap prices.
  • Historic. Beautiful. Well maintained. Fort area is the best place for cheap shopping. Opposite Flora Fountain is the amazing flagship store of Zara ! :)

Where to stay in Mumbai (Bombay)

In a cramped city like Mumbai, finding a budget hotel can present a serious challenge. Many business travelers and tourists choose to stay in South Mumbai, the oldest and richest neighborhood in the city. Accommodations here put you close to most top museums, restaurants, bars, art galleries, and shops. Proximity to major attractions comes at a premium price, though--not surprising for one of the most expensive cities in Asia. If you plan to visit on a tight budget, look for options near railway stations, but prepare for low-grade rooms and few or no amenities.
