Where to stay in Mumbai (Bombay)

In a cramped city like Mumbai, finding a budget hotel can present a serious challenge. Many business travelers and tourists choose to stay in South Mumbai, the oldest and richest neighborhood in the city. Accommodations here put you close to most top museums, restaurants, bars, art galleries, and shops. Proximity to major attractions comes at a premium price, though--not surprising for one of the most expensive cities in Asia. If you plan to visit on a tight budget, look for options near railway stations, but prepare for low-grade rooms and few or no amenities.

  • One of the best museums I've been to in a while. The pieces were absolutely incredible, well preserved, and with well-written and informative descriptions in several languages. The building itself was also beautiful and historic. A tip: don't bother going to the cafe, the options are bad and the room is kind of gross
  • This is an amazing place. A must go for every one. After spending 4 hours, we covered just the ground floor. Entire top floor is to be explored yet. Every student must be taken there. Was lucky to attend a programme by natural streets for performing arts there...
  • Bhau Daji Lad Museum is the oldest museum in Mumbai. It is a 2 minute walk from Byculla station, on the east side. The building is built in European style, with high ceilings and Victorian pillars. The imported Minton tiles and the beautiful ceiling takes one back to the masterly craftsmanship of nineteenth century. The museum had a major restoration exercise between 2000 and 2009 Many of the arts and crafts of India are on display on the ground floor. The museum holds decorative metal ware, bronze sculptures, weapons, fossils and ivory paintings.
  • If you want to know about the history of Bombay, then this is the place to be. There is also a zoo adjacent to it. The museum has a cafe too but doesn't serve many dishes. Cafe could have been better.
  • Especially love the Bombay connection of the pieces on display - old photographs and relief maps. Love the galleries where Art Exhibits are given space. Movies and events at the museum are lovely and worth attending.
