St. Aloysius Chapel, Mangalore

4.5
Witness a fine example of European-style architecture and celebrated artworks at St. Aloysius Chapel. Built in 1878, the church forms part of a college, located at the heart of Mangalore. Its famed interior features richly colored fresco and canvas paintings of the lives of Aloysius Gonzaga, as well as the lives of Jesus Christ and his apostles. Step inside to see Italian painter Antonio Moscheni's works depicting Aloysius as a child, his first holy communion, and him seeking commission to the Jesuit Order; those of Jesus depict his birth, his baptism by St. John, and his crucifixion. • The chapel at St Aloysius is an extraordinary phenomenon. It is not a mere monument or edifice, but a living, functioning church. When I visited, at 8.30am on a Saturday it was crowded with university...  more »

  • This Chapel is comparable with the Sistine chapel in Rome. The special beauty of the chapel is the wonderful series of paintings. The two types of paintings in the chapel are fresco on plaster and oil on canvas. The sloping portion of the ceiling has paintings of St Peter and the Crowing of the Cock, Saints Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, Philip, Mathew, Bartholomew, Simon and Jude. The central row of paintings on the ceiling depicts the life of St Aloysius Gonzaga to whom the chapel is dedicated.
  • Very beautiful church with awesome paintings on the wall. It has a very peaceful and calm environment. It's very well maintained and is worth visiting.
  • The visit was good. the paintings on the walls of the chapel are amazing considering the fact that the painting was done very early and there was no sign of fading/corrosion
  • The paintings are equisite in nature. Some of the biblical references on the walls are cited in Italian/Latin.Unfortunately,The staff prohibited me to take pictures in the chapel. If you are a photographer, this is going to be a big turn off for you.The person in charge is really Welcoming.I enjoyed his conversation about other tourist places in mangalore. And most importantly, you have to leave your footware outside doorstep. There is no guide available on a permanent basis here. The guide facility can only be utilised if have a prior appointment.Same applies for people in Large groups. The timings mentioned are subjected to change in case of any Religious ceremonies.
  • Great place with amazing paintings. There's a museum near by. Great place!
