Ruin
Admire the daunting walls and intelligent engineering of Sindhudurg Fort, a 17th-century fortification built on an islet in the Arabian Sea. The fortress covers 19.4 hectares (48 acres), and its huge, 3 km (1.8 mi) long, 9.1 m (30 ft) high brick rampart offers ample defense from invaders and the sea. Enjoy some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the country around the islet, observing diverse marine life, or simply wander around the richly historical site, observing the fascinating building work. Consider bargaining with your boat ride for more time exploring the island. Arrange to visit Sindhudurg Fort and other attractions in Malvan using our Malvan vacation trip planner.

  • The fort is surrounded by Arabian sea by all sides. We have to go via a boat from malvan sea coast to the fort. The fort is very ancient and also has fingerprint of the great Maratha Chhatrapati Shri Shivaji Maharaj. The atmosphere is bit hot there. The fort is planar mostly and also has few houses there.
  • This 1664 structure was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj under the guidance of Hiroji Indulkar. Spread over 48 acres, it has few civil engineering implementations which are amazing. The road we took from Kolhapur is in bad shape. Years of neglect and heavy tourist turn over complicates the same. The Gaganbawda Ghat section needs urgent repairs as it's a scenic spot itself.
  • Good for starters if you haven't visited any sea fortresses. There's pretty much nothing here but the fort walls, ruins and history. Definitely visit if you are interested in architecture and/or history. Impressive is the clean water around. I would recommend spending some time on the Tarkarli beach than coming to the fort if you have less time in Malwan.
  • Edit This fort was constructed by Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire. The main object was to counter rising influence of foreign colonizers (The English, Dutch, French and Portuguese merchants) and to curb the rise of Siddis of Janjira. The construction was done under the supervision of Hiroji Indulkar, in the year 1656
