Monuments at Mahabalipuram, Mahabalipuram

Carved out of rock, Monuments at Mahabalipuram deserved their World Heritage designation as the world's biggest open-air rock relief. This complex of 40 odd temples dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries. See cave sanctuaries, temples shaped like chariots made of sandstone, and thousands of sculptures of Shiva. A masterpiece of Indian art, a bas-relief depicting the goddess Durga killing a buffalo-headed demon remains among the site's highlights. • The monuments are out in the open. Guide gave us the background & stories about the panels. ASI could put up more detailed history on their Boards and keep them clean.  more »

  • Mahabalipuram is a travelers and photographers delight. Each and every rock here has a story to tell. It has excellent carvings in stones and one shouldn't miss these at any cost. The butter ball which remains tilted at an angle is magnificent. While visiting this group of monuments do visit Tiger caves too which is not very far from Mahabalipuram
  • Fantastic and awesome place to visit in weekend. Such a beautiful place to spend time on. Visited 4 or 5 places that visitor can spend time on. My favourite moon rackers restaurant deserves more repeated visits. They are collecting money for parking and entry but that's okay very cheap money that's affordable. Beach was awesome. A good level of water to enjoy. Freakout come to Mahabalipuram and enjoy at weekends...
  • Historical monument a heritage point near Chennai, just 2 hr drive from Chennai.. Breath Taking view of the monument near the Mahaballipuraum Beach. The beach is also very well Maintained and clean for tourists visit. Worth visiting the light house you can get a very great view of the whole area from the top.
  • This is one of the major attractions in Mahabalipuram and definitely worth a visit. Inside this complex you will mostly find the sea shore temple which is the biggest temple in the region. Whats more, this is one of the oldest temples built in India dating back to the 7th century. For such an old monument, it is surprisingly stood the test of time with little weathering. a walk around the complex reveals brilliant views of the temple as well as the surrounding seas. This involves a bit of walking and navigating some steps and therefore it is not wheelchair accessible everywhere.
  • Mahabalipuram is great and is best when visited in the winter(?). Shore Temple is too good and looks great in the morning and evening. Best time is to visit in the morning as it will not be too warm. We visited once in August and it was too warm. Great beach and a lot of restaurants and hotels.
