#3 of 8 in Historic Sites in Mahabaleshwar
Head to Pratapgarh Fort to witness a historic site where a battle that led to the establishment of the Maratha Empire took place in the 17th century. Perched on a hill 1,053 m (3,454 ft) above sea level, the fort features two sections, the higher of which offers far-reaching views of rolling green hills, surrounding villages, and the western coastline of India. While there, you can also stop by Chhatrapati Shivaji, a temple built on wooden pillars. • The place is fully commercialized with hotels and shops everywhere inside the historic fort. Instead of making a monument of the great Shivaji inside, I wish they had maintained his fort properly. There are some good parts to this location too. You have to climb and walk on the narrow path that goes along the walls to get the most amazing views. It is like all the view points of Mahabaleshwar stringed together. 4/5 stars. It would be 5/5 if the place wasn't so commercialized.
  • Pratapgad Fort is very easy trek up top. Even kids and elderly can spend some good time trekking up. There are places from where there is a great view. The breeze is always cool up. It is also kept clean by the tourists and locals equally.
  • Nice natural and historical place. Nice way to follow after Mahabaleshwar. Cons: 1. People are living inside fort 2. Artificial iron sheet houses are taking the beauty of the fort out. 3 . Lots of custom work going on. Some is natural but most is artificial 4. Parking facility is not managed 5. Police are taking bribe while entering the way to the fort and out.
  • Historical place which will remind of Maratha rulers. Tomb of Afzal Khan is at same place. This would be good place if there were no shops. Hand made stuff like footwear and dresses made by nearby villagers are available at reasonable cost at the entrance of this fort. And you get Strawberries in all seasons.
  • This hard to conquer fort is masterpiece in terms of location and architecture. One of the best forts built by Chhatrapati Shivaji. Building a fort on steep hills itself amazing. Camouflaged entrance of the fort is really awesome, it is built in such style that from a distance enemy can not even guess about the entry gate.
