Gandhi Memorial Museum, Madurai

4.0
At Gandhi Memorial Museum, explore one of the five museums in India dedicated to Gandhi, located in the impressive Tamukkam Palace. The memorial museum was established in 1959, after an appeal by the citizens of India, who wanted to see memorials built in Gandhi’s honor. Wander through the historic palace, and discover the blood-stained clothes worn by Gandhi when he was assassinated in 1948. You’ll also find many letters of interest on display, as well as collections relating to India's fight for freedom, Gandhi's life story, and the nation's political history. A visit to Gandhi Memorial Museum represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Madurai day trip tool to plot your vacation.

  • Very one-sided museum. Its major theme is that Indians were down-trodden by the British ( Indians definitely were), but gives no credit to the advances introduced during British rule, mentioning them as if introduced to the sub-continent solely by Indians. It makes little mention of the active acquiescence of the Indian rulers to further their own positions. There is no mention of Hindu attacks on other faiths during Partition although other acts of 'terrorism' are. Apart from this the Gandhi section is small, but well laid out
  • Starts with Indians struggle and battle for freedom. It has collections of M.K. Gandhi's daily utensils, his written letters to other personalities and depicts positive Gandhian lifestyle. It takes around 3 to 4 hours to completely go through the museum but, during my visit I experienced people just glancing through the written manuscripts and printed billboards line photographs which resulted them in finishing the complete Museum visit in half an hour.
  • The history of how India got her independence has been told beautifully and in such an engaging way. Never been so gripped by narrative writing in a museum before! And it has all been hand painted! Gandhi's last worn garment is present here too, and the building itself is too grand for words. You must must see this and walk around it.
  • Very peaceful place with important historical facts. It beautifully narrates the Indian struggle for Independence and also has articles used by Gandhi . It would take minimum half and hour to go around depending your interest in history. It also has a center for Gandhian Study and a beautiful library
  • Amazing museum. Has great collection of few original artifacts used by Gandhi and also of few replicas. It has many letters written by Gandhi himself. There is a pleasing display of freedom movement moments captured wonderfully in the form of 265 illustrations. The main highlight of the museum is the display of bloodstained piece of cloth worn by Gandhi on the day when he was shot by Nathuram Godse.
