Chelavara Falls, Madikeri

#7 of 16 in Nature in Kodagu (Coorg)
Enjoy lush greenery and fabulous hidden treasure of Coorg at Chelavara Falls, a natural waterfall formed by a stream amidst green coffee plantation. Pouring from 46 m (150 ft), over a rock cascade resembling a tortoise, the falls are known as Emepaare in the local language which is a word for a tortoise in Kodava language. The water crashes into a large pool and you will get sprayed by the water. You can abseil down the falls and dip yourself in the pool but you should be careful during the rainy season. • Public is not allowed to play in the water due to accidental loss of lives. One can view the beautiful falls from a distance and click pictures. The area is fenced for people's safety. The hike on the Chelavara hills was breathtakingly beautiful. The best way to come close to the nature.
  • A beautiful waterfall with a walk through a wooded path but unfortunately you can't get too close to the water. With a pathetic barricade made of barbed wire forming a view point, the 10-minute climb to the place ends abruptly and the experience seems almost over before it begins. Disappointing and avoidable. The other view point nearby is a short hike up a hill and is a better option.
  • A poorly maintained falls. No parking available. Have to park on the ghat road especially where the road takes a deep turn. One has to be careful while parking the cars or vehicles on the road or while getting down from the vehicles since the road is not so good and moving vehicles may not be able to notice you easily. There's always a forest guard at the falls. We get only the side view of the water fall which if the water flow is not heavy, feels not so worthy a visit and especially the tough path that is traversed to reach the spot.
  • This is superb place to visit. We can go bottom of the falls. The concrete road to reach the falls is very narrow one should drive carefully. Passing of two four vehicle is little difficult. No parking place near to falls. The view of the falls is very close and we can enjoy fall of water on our body. It is dangerous to get into water.
  • It's a very nice waterfall. But you can't get into it or take bath. Access is closed. You've to just see from far and enjoy.
