Rumi Darwaza, Lucknow
Categories: Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Marvel at the imposingly of Rumi Darwaza, an impressive gate in downtown Lucknow. Modeled after the Sublime Porte in Istanbul, this 18 m (60 ft) tall gateway features an elaborate carving of the main arch flanked by two slim observation towers. Built in 1784 in Awadian Mughal tradition, the gate guarded an ancient entrance to Lucknow through the main pointed arch masterfully carved on the outer rim after which the traffic splits through the three smaller pointed arches. Named Rumi after Eastern Roman Empire, the predecessor of Istanbul, the structure featured jets of water rushing out of the sides of the arch from stone flower buds. u do need someone to actually tell u its significance. Else you will just mistake it to be one of the the other monuments here
