Roomi Darwaza, Lucknow

4.0
#2 of 12 in Historic Sites in Lucknow
Marvel at the imposing structure of Roomi Darwaza, an impressive gate in downtown Lucknow. Modeled after the Sublime Porte in Istanbul, this 18 m (60 ft) tall gateway features an elaborate carving of the main arch flanked by two slim observation towers. Built in 1784 in Awadian Mughal tradition, the gate guarded an ancient entrance to Lucknow through the main pointed arch, masterfully carved on the outer rim. After this point, traffic on the road below splits through three smaller pointed arches. Named Rumi in honor of the Eastern Roman Empire--the predecessor of Istanbul--the structure features jets of water rushing out of the sides of the arch from stone flower buds. • Also known by the name, Turkish Gate, the Rumi Darwaza was built in 1784 by the Nawab Asaf-ud-daula. The monument is a massive gateway which is one of the best specimens of Awadhi Style architecture. The monument’s grandness in design is often compared to that of Rome and the Ottoman Empire and marks the entrance to the old city of Lucknow.
  • Beautiful display of Nawabs Architecture .... Grandeur of a background lyk coverall... Especially during night light it glows lyk anything under the street lamps..liting the place to glorify the scenic beauty of so meticulously articated design shape and direction...Epitome of lucknow ancient culture and undoubtedly the emblem of Lucknow....

  • "The 60 feet high Rumi Gate was constructed during the reign of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784-86." It is said to be identical in design to an ancient portal at Constantinople in Turkey and is also referred to as Turkish Gate........... It is a huge ornate structure, marked by an eight faceted chhatri in its uppermost part .......... In earlier times it was used to mark the entrance to the Old Lucknow City. It is now adopted as a symbol of the city of Lucknow. It was built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula to generate employment during the famine of 1784.......... ...........................
  • Nice place to visit... Even child or senior citizen.. Great place for everyone.
